Model Railroad Wiring – A Basic Understanding Will Take You A Long Way

Being able to set up model railroad wiring is an extremely important part of being a model train and railroad enthusiast.

It is also an exciting element of the hobby as you are able to control the stops and runs of the railroad set. Trains are meant to stop at each station and gradually decelerate on tight corners and junctions. In order to make this all possible, you should have at least a basic knowledge of model railroad wiring.

Model railroad wiring is the aspect of railroading which involves making electricity flow so that the engine is able to pull its cars and buildings and illuminate streetlights. In fact, wiring has become so advanced that you can attach a tiny camera on the top of your train as it moves through the display.

Be creative and you can include almost anything to your display to make it more fun and appealing.

The Fundamentals of Model Railroad Wiring

As you should already know, model railroading exposes you to many subject areas and one of them is electrical wiring and circuitry. Of course, if you are a beginner and have no knowledge of this area then it is best that you consult a friend or fellow model train hobbyist to get you started. You can even buy a pre-wired circuit baseboard if you so choose.

Controllers

Controllers or transformers run the voltage which establishes the speed at which the train’s engine will operate. The controllers also give power to the various accessories so they can be switched on or off. The controller has direct current (DC) terminals and alternating current (AC) terminals. The DC terminals control the engine so the train can move in reverse. The AC terminals control accessories like street lamps. Wiring can run from underneath the board to each accessory. It’s easy to connect the wires as both the DC and AC terminals are usually marked on the controller.

Voltage

Voltage is also an important part of your wiring. Lights and other accessories included in the display should be rated at the same voltage or just above that of the output of the AC terminals. For instance, if you use a six volt bulb on a 12 volt terminal, the bulb will blow. In addition, having too many accessories on the same power pack can reduce the performance of your locomotive. So, look for things like the train moving slower. This will indicate that you may have to add more power packs to power all those accessories on your model train layout.

Digital Command Control (DCC)

DCC is a major advancement in technology which allows an operator to give the track a digital signal. The signal tells the locomotive what to do and so if you are operating two locomotives on the same electrical track, it can be done so independently.

Avoiding Accidents

Working with wiring can present worst case scenarios, so here are a few tips to help prevent the occurrence of accidents. All wires should be properly wired and tight. Your tracks should be connected to the DC terminal and not the AC terminal as this may damage your train’s engine. Debris and dust will build up after awhile so clean the track with a soft, clean cloth and using a track cleaner. You want to avoid dust getting inside the engine and causing a short.

The modern day starter model train sets make it very easy for the person with no model railroad wiring experience as everything is color coded. This is where you should probably consider starting.

Electric Train Sets – An Easy Way to Get Started in Model Railroading

Ok, so you may have thought about starting a model railroading hobby, but you may be a little overwhelmed right now.  I know that when I take a look online, even I get a little overwhelmed with all the different books, parts, pieces, layouts, advice, and tools that are out there right now.  Where do you even get started if you’re a complete beginner?  I’d recommend you take a look at electric train sets for a few reasons.

If you’re getting into model railroading, it’s more than likely going to become a lifelong love affair that you’ll be continually building and adding to.  You’re going to learn a lot over the years, but you need a starting point.  I’m sure you know nothing about controllers, track grade, scale, or anything else about model railroading, which is why you need an electric train set to start out with.

Electric train sets give you everything you need in one box, ready to go.  You don’t have to be a skilled model railroad engineer to get one of these set up, just the right amount of space and some time and you’ll be on your way.

With electric train sets, everything is in the box.  The track, the trains, all you need to get your first set up and running.  And most sets are fairly inexpensive, so you’ll be able to see if this is something you really want to get into without spending a lot of money up front.  Take for instance this electric train set from Life-Like Trains.  With this set, you’ve even got two tracks in the box that you can set up and get you going.  Once you’ve got your first set going, you can add to it, change it, purchase different engines, cars, scenery and more.

Electric train sets are the first step in your model railroading hobby, but there’s a lot more that you’ll need to learn.  I’d recommend you check out the amazing Model Trains for Beginners guide as you’re beginning your journey into the amazing world of model railroading.  You’ll save yourself a lot of time and money by following this guide, plus get a lot of enjoyment with your hobby.

I’ll see you at the tracks,

Mike

Small Model Train Layouts – The Answer for Your Cramped Train Space

Here’s something that I hear often from people in our fast moving, modern world that want to get into model railroading.  They tell me that they would love to setup a model train layout, but they just don’t have the space and they believe they don’t have the budget.  If you’ve spent any time looking at model railroading as a hobby, you’d probably agree that it can be a bit expensive and, if you really get into it, can require a pretty large amount of space in your home.

So, how do you get around that?  Model railroading is a great hobby and just because you don’t have a lot of room or a big budget shouldn’t mean that you can’t enjoy it like the people with the huge model railroad layouts in their basements do.

There’s a whole other world of small model train layouts that you can get into that will fit your smaller space and budget.

See, you don’t have to have a huge basement or a separate building for your model train layout!  In face, small model train layouts are becoming more popular every day.

Now, I won’t spend a lot of time here on building small model train layouts, but here are some things to think about.  There are several different scales of model trains that you can use, HO being the most popular and probably the most recognized scale.  But you’ve also got small scales like N and Z that can be great for a small space.

However, when you’re working with a small space, you need to do a bit more planning and designing your layout, which is why you should really check out this fantastic model train layout guide that will help you out quite a bit.

I know that a lot of you out there are looking for a way to start model railroading as a hobby, and this is a great way to start.  Don’t believe that you have to have a big space to build a great layout and experience the joy of model railroading.  That’s simply not the case.

And there’s a ton of you reading this that already have a large train layout and just want to build something small in another area, which is exciting too!  Either way, you’ll need to do some planning to make sure your layout will work in your space.

You really should pick up this book on model train layouts to help you on your journey, whether you’re new to model railroading or an old engineer.  You’ll be glad you did.

I’ll see you at the tracks,

Mike

P.S.  Did I mention that when you purchase that model train layout guide, you’ll also get a free copy of “303 Model Railroading Answers”?  I DIDN’T?  It’s true!  I don’t know how long that offer will last, so make sure you hop on it right now, your train set will thank you!

which is better lionel o scale trains or ho scale?

ive been interested in model railroading and railroad history ever since i was little ive got lionel stuff i want you to answer and give your opinion

I’ve been model railroading since about 1972… we had a lionel O loop to start… but then moved to HO scale for the simple reason that we could put more in our limited space (Mom’s just don’t seem to get it).

We built up an HO layout over two 4×8 sheets of plywood that lasted until my Dad donated it to some YOUNG neighbor kids in 1998.

ANYWAY, I STRONGLY prefer HO scale over O. A FAR wider selection, less expense, and twice the “railroad” per area.

CURRENTLY, I’m working in N-scale which is getting ALMOST as popular as HO… and gives twice the area as HO !! I have a HUGE Yard based on Stockton, California and it’s surrounding industries.

GOOD LUCK !!
